Major
Federation Gains
The
Federation provides its members with a fair degree of legal and contractual
protection. Most importantly, through collective bargaining agreements,
the Federation has been able to achieve a number of gains for its members.
The highlights are presented below. By clicking on the hypertext link,

- This
has stopped abuses and prompted management to become more sensitive
to the needs of all employees.A
Reduction in Contact HoursIn
the contract negotiated in 2000, all full-time faculty saw their
contact hours reduce. Culinary faculty had their contact hours reduced
from 30 to 24, while all other faculty had their contact hours reduced
from 24 to 20. All full-time faculty also received for office hours
in addition.

- To
our knowledge, AIPH is the only school in the system in which part-
timers receive a contribution for health benefits.
- Faculty
who take family benefits currently receive a company contribution
of $100.00 per month in addition to whatever flex credits they have.
Part-time faculty receive an additional $5.00 per month towards their
benefits purchase. To our knowledge, this does not happen anywhere
else among the Art Institutes.
- While
the system is far from perfect, at least there is a system. Formerly,
some ADs were fond of scheduling their friends and business associates
over qualified faculty with many years of service.
- Full-time
faculty with 21 quarters of full-time service (or the equivalent)
may take up to one full quarter off, with pay and benefits, every
five years. Part-time faculty with ten years of service may, every
five years, take paid time off equivalent to the number of hours
taught in the previous two years.
- All
full-time faculty have office hours.
Guarantees
for Part-time Faculty
- Part-time
faculty can't be continued as Temporary
Full-time indefinitely. After serving as temporary full-time
for six of eight quarters, a faculty member must be made permanently
full-time. Furthermore, part-time
faculty with more than 12 years of service are guaranteed an average
number of classes each quarter, based upon their quarterly average
over the past two years. Part-timers
hired before March 20, 1997, cannot be forced to teach at night. Lastly,
permanent part-timers have first
choice of unscheduled classes over new hires or part-time faculty
on review status.
- We
have outlined a process for dealing with complaints against faculty
from both administrators and students that provides for the faculty
member's timely notification of the complaint and the identification
of the complainant in most cases.
- Our
faculty are protected by the school from law suits brought against
them by students when the faculty member is performing normal--and
legal--classroom duties.
- Class
size is maximized at 27 students for most classes. If the school
finds it necessary to increase that size, the faculty member must
grant permission. Classes with more than 27 also carry a small economic
bonus for the faculty member teaching that class.
- Faculty
serving on standing committees will be paid for all meeting time.
- Course
batching, having one faculty member teach two or more subjects in
the same room at the same time, is allowed only in special circumstances
and only with the permission of the union. As a result, we don't
have a "one room school house" very often.
